Volkswagen Approved Polo 6R Daytime Running Lights

It's been quite awhile since I have updated my blog. During this period, several enhancements have been done to my Red Riding Hood. Other than the rear sway bar, I have bought a Ignition Project coil pack, a Forge atmospheric dump valve kit, Eibach Pro kit lowering springs and a pair of rare Volkswagen approved Polo 6R MS Design Daytime Running Lights (DRL)!

Before I blog on the rest of these items, allow me to cover on the DRLs first which were freshly installed last week. Sometime in June 2013, I decided on getting a set of DRLs for the car and Thus, i embarked on a long search for these. Although the Internet is a great source where i can find a lot of interesting pictures and websites, i am still hesitant on getting them since i am still unsure on the make and quality of those DRLs. In addition, there were mixed reviews about these DRLs which also replace the fog lights.

Alternatives
Other than the most expensive option of the original Polo 6R GTI Xenon headlights with built-in DRLs, there are other direct headlight replacements for the car available. These are namely DRLs from the "Sonic Racing" and " Dayline". These are actually modeled after the original GTI Xenons except that they use normal halogen bulbs.

Sonic Racing
From the website pictures, The DRLs from the "Sonic Racing" range looks bright.  however, I am unsure whether these will dim when the headlights or pole lights are switched on.

Dayline
as for the Dayline range, the DRLs are the plug and play type so these lights  make use of the original lights sockets. You may wonder how the DRLs light up if they are using the original sockets. In fact, the built in LEDs are not DRLs per se. They only light up when the light control switch in the cabin is switched on to pole lights. So in order to have the effect of lighting up, the switch must be left in the pole light position. Hence, I was a little disappointed.

Retrofit DRLs
Nonetheless, All is not lost as while I was surfing in eBay, I finally came across a set of retrofit DRLs specifically designed and manufactured for the Polo 6R.! In fact, It was posted for sale by an VAG agent in Germany. At that time, they were having a summer sale and these set of lights were put up on auction. Fortunately,after  a few days of nerve wracking and anxious wait, I was finally announced the bidding winner! Furthermore, these set of original lights were much cheaper than what was listed in the Volkswagen website in UK.

These set of lights came with wiring harnesses, a pair of DRLs as well as the mounting instructions, EU approved certificate, a mounting template and a couple of cable ties. The installation of these lights were quite straight forward. however, holes must be cut out from the bumper.

Installation Steps
The steps taken to install them are as follows:

1) Disconnect all lightings connectors inclusive of foglight while dismounting the bumper;

2) Utilize  the position mounting template, carefully draw out the holes which will be cut out;

3) Use a pneumatic saw, slowly and carefully cutout the marked areas while test fitting the lights;

4) Once the position of the lights are confirmed, take them out and apply silicon glue for fittment and leave them to cure;

5) Use the connectors which are provided to integrate the DRLs with the car's lighting system while mounting the bumper.

Note that these DRLs will be turned on once the key is turned and will remain on until the following conditions;

1) When the headlight switch in the cabin is turned to switch on the pole lights or headlights,
2) When the left or right signal lights are used. Note that the DRLs will be turned off temporarily whenever the signal lights are activated,
3) Hazard lights are activated.

After Thoughts
After installation and using them for the past week, I must say that this is one of the best investment which I had ever made to the car. The quality and built of these lights are top notch and can even be passed off as the originals from the factory. They are bright when viewed from a certain angle so as to reduce glare for other road users and really work as advertised. I do not have any problems using them and they are really a beauty and a piece of art!

Kudos to the guys who designed and manufactured them! Lastly, do note that these lights can only be bought from VAG agent as MS Design, the company which design them does not retail to individual buyers.

What is Next!
Next coming up, is the blog on the Whiteline rear sway bar!
So do stay tuned!
